Old article on advertising

A memory from 7 years ago—and believe me, the ads have only gotten stupider!

ADVERTISING SERIES

PART ONE

(I’m starting a series about advertisements which catch my eye and either WORK or most often, DON’T.)

Have you ever watched a commercial and found yourself thinking, “I WOULD NEVER buy their product because [fill in the blank]”? Isn’t the whole point of advertising to make you WANT to buy their product? When they backfire, as some do SPECTACULARLY (and some with a whimper), it can be annoying or hilarious. Of course, we’re all different and no ad can speak to everyone, so take it as meant, that these are MY opinions. YMMV.

Have you seen the commercials for a car insurance company which prominently feature a National Monument in the background? Yep, that one. The one with the guy who throws his wallet into the Bay? Or the guy with the fat suit for his CALVES?

The one where people whine because they did something stupid with their car and yet expect to have everything made perfect and shiny with no inconvenience to themselves, simply because they bought car insurance?

[Insert rant about the proper use and meaning of car insurance here—no wait, you google it. I’ll wait.]

The people in those commercials (with the exception of the one about grudges!) are SO STUPID that I always think they shouldn’t be allowed to own a car—at least not until they grow up and become real adults.

So, take your “accident forgiveness” away quietly. You FAIL.

I’d love to hear your comments on commercials, my writing, or anything at all! Just keep it polite, folks. Thanks in advance.
