Working in the Car and Other Thoughts

We’re on our way to a conference (WCoNA—the Writers Conference of Northern Appalachia®) and NO, I’m not driving. That is the job of the Husband, aka Chief Toter/Fetcher and all around great support. He doesn’t go to everything with me (but we’re both helping with the Conference this time.) When he does, everything is SO much easier.

He’s listening to his latest audiobook, Clete by James Lee Burke (gotta love that Will Patton’s reading!) I’m not really listening—just hearing the sound and clearing out my inbox, doing some chores, and navigating.

I bought a Macbook nearly two years ago, and it’s the best decision I ever made for my working life (personally, YMMV and that’s fine.) I can clearly see the screen (even have to turn down the brightness sometimes) and it’s easy to do small tasks, as today, or to edit or even write. I just invested in a Mac Mini desktop, and got two screens (21”!) and a keyboard. I need to pick up a webcam and mic soon, until then, I’m doing meetings on my laptop still. Which works great.

I got the desktop largely because I felt I needed an extra screen for my editing work. When I have to compare the original MS to the copy I am editing—especially if I’m adding footnotes—it’s delightful to have them up side by side. One monitor will hold two docs at easily visible size, so the second can have up reference materials, social media, calls from Mom, and/or something to listen to while I’m working. I love it, and will miss it while we’re gone, for nearly a week. (We have a daughter within driving distance of the event, and so will spend time at her house to decompress.)

The Best Dog Ever is in the backseat. He loves to ride, loves the car, and is so good we could forget he’s there—until we stop. Or if his pointy little rear gets in the wrong spot—and the backseat seatbelt alarm goes off. He doesn’t like that, and so moves until it quits.

Well we will arrive soon, so I’d better wrap this up. It’s been cloudy, and even snowy, a large part of the way. I am so ready for spring, mud and all.

I’ll try to get some photos out soon. In the meantime, if you get a chance to go to any writerly event—enjoy it thoroughly. There’s nothing like the company of other writers.
